Assistant Professor of Chemistry

University of Alberta

Canada

Description

Position

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta (www.ualberta.ca/chemistry) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Inorganic or Materials Chemistry. The targeted starting date is July 1, 2025. Preferential consideration will be given to individuals whose research areas are of consensual interest to the faculty and complement current expertise in the Department. The Department has vibrant research programs encompassing most areas of modern chemistry, including materials and nanoscience, catalysis, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, spectroscopy, synthesis and medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, computational chemistry, and instrumentation and analysis. It offers an outstanding research environment, with access to excellent support facilities.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry (or related discipline). Successful candidates must demonstrate potential to develop an innovative and robust research program that is externally funded, to engage in relevant national and international research networks, and to provide high-calibre teaching and mentorship at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Research potential will be evidenced by a strong record of publications and presentations, a successful research funding history (in the case of applicants who already hold a tenure-track position), a summary of planned research projects, and appropriately supportive and detailed letters of reference. Teaching and supervisory potential will be evidenced by previous teaching experiences, letters of reference, and a statement of teaching philosophy. Successful candidates must also demonstrate how they will contribute to increasing the diversification of ideas within the Department through a statement about equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). In their EDI statement, candidates should describe how they plan to incorporate EDI into their teaching, research, mentoring, and service. The Faculty of Science has developed EDI and Indigenous strategic plans; the Department of Chemistry supports these EDI initiatives.

How to Apply

Submit a curriculum vitae, a proposal that details innovative and original research plans, a statement of teaching philosophy (submit as an attachment under "Other"), an EDI statement, and contact information for three references. Letters of references will only be requested from shortlisted candidates. Include a cover letter as part of the first page(s) of the curriculum vitae, highlighting potential synergies, complementarity, and contributions to the Department.

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled, with a targeted start date of July 1, 2025.

At the University of Alberta, we are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible hiring process for all candidates.
