Position

If you are passionate about teaching, the Faculty of Engineering offers state-of-the-art research and instructional labs and a team of professors, instructors, and staff who value an exceptional student experience. Student education and well-being are at the core of what we do. The Teaching Professor (Experiential and Professional Education) is responsible for developing and instructing courses offered through the Experiential and Professional Education unit in the Faculty of Engineering Office of the Dean.

The Experiential and Professional Education (EPE) unit drives the delivery of active, hands-on, and immersive curricular and co-curricular experiences for students in the Faculty of Engineering and fosters a culture of lifelong learning, collaboration and innovation in engineering education. EPE’s work directly supports Engineering’s strategic goal of delivering an exceptional engineering education by focusing on developing whole engineers – head, hands, and heart – who possess a mastery of the technical, intellectual, interpersonal, and self.

The Teaching Professor (EPE) contributes to this goal by supporting the development and leading the instruction of non-technical courses focused on community development, interpersonal and communication skills, leadership, experiential learning, and the development of well-rounded graduates of the Faculty of Engineering. The initial focus of this role is on curriculum development and course design; however, it is expected that the ratio of work will shift to favour teaching as courses are developed and approved.

The Teaching Professor (EPE) is also expected to contribute to Faculty and community service and conduct research on engineering education, effective and innovative pedagogy, and experiential learning. The Faculty of Engineering strives to be recognized as a leader in experiential learning and engineering education, and the Teaching Professor (EPE) directly supports this goal.

This position will be a 3-year-term appointment under the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) Collective Agreement and comes with a comprehensive benefits package, see Academic Teaching Staff, Benefits Overview.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience following the Collective Agreement.

Duties

Teaching of University Credit Courses:

  • Provides instruction to undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Design course syllabus; order textbooks and other course materials as required; prepare, administer, and mark final exams/assignments; complete records related to grades; may be required to prepare and/or administer deferred exams.
  • Evaluate student performance progress and provide appropriate and timely feedback according to department protocols.
  • May provide supervision to undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrates scholarship and remains up to date in the discipline or profession of educational best practices and engineering education by keeping course syllabi and assignments relevant to the needs of the current students.
  • Abide by Faculty and University Academic policies (including Department policies).
  • Other duties usually required by ATS.

Teaching-Related Activities:

  • Works with staff and faculty in the Experiential and Professional Education unit on the collaborative development of curriculum and design of courses.
  • Attends course-related orientations, meetings, and other activities related to teaching assignments.
  • May be required to teach additional LAB/SEM with compensation for the additional FTE.
  • May oversee GSA TAs and administrative staff assigned to the course(s).
  • Hold office hours as per department policy.
  • Assists in the management of teaching assignments.
  • Calls and chairs meetings.
  • Provide instructional coverage, development support, and ‘back-up’ for other credit courses offered by the Faculty of Engineering Office of the Dean.
  • Other duties usually required by ATS.

Service Contributions:

  • Participate in program continual improvement and accreditation processes (i.e. provide course and student information as requested for program accreditation)
  • Participates in the governance of the Faculty through committee membership.
  • Disseminates knowledge to the general public by making their expertise and knowledge of the discipline available, such as recruiting prospective engineering students or outreach to kindergarten to Grade 12 students.
  • Supports other curricular and co-curricular activities offered by the Experiential and
  • Professional Education unit.

Research and Scholarly Activities:

  • Includes pedagogical research and innovation, reflective inquiry, and research for subject currency to stay up-to-date in teaching practices.
  • Conducts research on engineering education, innovative pedagogy, and experiential learning in post-secondary, in collaboration with others in the Experiential and Professional Education unit.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Ten or more years working in industry, post-secondary education, or community development; a breadth of diverse experience is preferred.
  • Masters or PhD Degree Required; degrees in Engineering, Education, or the Social Sciences are preferred.
  • Teaching experience and knowledge of pedagogy and curriculum design, including experience with course or program development
  • Experience with course delivery in a variety of modalities, both in-person and online, synchronous or asynchronous, and traditional or flipped classrooms
  • Ability to use Universal Design for Learning principles to make informed and equitable choices to remove barriers and enable equitable learning
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching, leadership, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge in developing student engagement and assessment strategies
  • Facilitation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to handle challenging student situations.
  • Experience in the application of equity, diversity, and inclusivity to learning and educational contexts

Considered an Asset

  • A demonstrated background in research on engineering education, innovative pedagogy, or experiential learning in post-secondary.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Indigenous ways of knowing, decolonization, Truth, and Reconciliation Calls to Action in adult learning and/or post-secondary programs
  • Experience with effective curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment for university classes of various sizes
  • Recent experience teaching in a post-secondary educational institution
  • Recent experience with various applications to deliver teaching materials, including learning management systems.
